Temazepam (Restoril® and generic) is a benzodiazepine that is used as a hypnotic. Here is basic information about this medication.
FDA-approved indications
Short-term treatment of insomnia (generally 7 to 10 days)
Pharmacokinetics
Half-life: About 3.5 to 18.5 hours (mean about 9 hours)
Dosage
Recommended: 15 mg orally at bedtime
Range: 7.5 to 30 mg at bedtime
Transient insomnia: 7.5 mg at bedtime
Elderly/debilitated patients: Initiate with 7.5 mg and then increase, if necessary and tolerated
The Prescribing Information notes that “For patients with short-term insomnia, instructions in the prescription should indicate that Restoril™ (temazepam) should be used for short periods of time (7 to 10 days).”
Dosage forms and strengths
Capsule: 7.5 mg, 15 mg, 22.5 mg, and 30 mg
