Oxazepam (US brand name Serax® has been discontinued but available as a generic) is a benzodiazepine that is used as an anxiolytic. Here is basic information about this medication.
FDA-approved indications
1. Anxiety disorders or short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety
2. Anxiety associated with depressive symptoms
3. Anxiety, tension, agitation, and irritability in older patients
4. Alcoholics with acute inebriation, tremulousness, or anxiety on withdrawal
Dosage
1. Mild-to-moderate anxiety with associated tension, irritability, agitation or related symptoms of functional origin or secondary to organic disease
10–15 mg, 3-4 times daily
2. Severe anxiety syndromes, agitation, or anxiety associated with depression
15–30 mg, 3-4 times daily
3. Older patients with anxiety, tension, irritability, and agitation
Initial: 10 mg, 3 times daily
Increase to 15 mg, 3-4 times daily, if needed and tolerated
4. Alcoholics with acute inebriation, tremulousness, or anxiety on withdrawal
15–30 mg, 3-4 times daily
Dosage forms and strengths
Capsule (generic): 10 mg, 15 mg, and 30 mg
