Matthew Helling says
Dr. Mago, I am a new provider (pmhnp) and am wondering about lamotrigine and hormonal birth control medication interactions. I was taught that lamotrigine and hormonal birth control each affected each other: that hormonal birth control lowered lamotrigine levels and that lamotrigine lowered the levels of hormonal birth control. I now see (on some websites) that hormonal birth control lowers lamotrigine levels but that lamotrigine does not affect the levels of hormonal birth control. Can you clear this up? Thanks, Matt H
Rajnish ("Raj") Mago, MD says
Hi Matt! It is great that you realize the practical importance of having correct and **reliable** answers to these clinically-relevant questions without having to waste a lot of time looking up multiple sources. On simpleandpractical.com, using the “Menus” is the best way to find answers to clinical questions. Your question is about the interaction of lamotrigine and hormonal birth control. You would hover your cursor on “Menus” at the top of any page, then click on either the menu for “Treatments” and go to Mood Stabilizers–Lamotrigine OR the menu for “Drug interactions” and go to the category of “Drug Interactions with Oral Contraceptives and Intrauterine Devices”. Either way, you would find the same articles on our website that answer the two aspects of your question (and other related articles if you want to know about related topics as well). For your convenience, here are direct links to the two articles that answer your specific question:
1. 5 Action Items about OCs and lamotrigine
2. Does lamotrigine decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives?
Here’s another article that is related to those ones:
Change lamotrigine dose in transgender women starting hormonal therapy?
