In older adults, avoid medications with anticholinergic activity

We know that cholinergic activity is important for memory and cognition, right? Anticholinergic medications can cause cognitive impairment. On the other hand, cholinesterase inhibitors that reduce breakdown of acetylcholine (e.g., donepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine) are used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. But it is not only “anticholinergic medications” like benztropine, trihexyphenidyl, etc…
