The interpretation of results for vitamin D levels can be confusing and, sometimes, tricky.
In other articles on this website, we have discussed:
– The meaning of the multiple terms related to vitamin D, the biotransformation of vitamin D in the skin, kidneys, and other tissues, and, most importantly, the practical implications of all this. Please see the following article on this website: What is vitamin D?
– What test should we order to measure vitamin D status, if that is needed? Please see the following article on this website: How should vitamin D status be measured?
(By the way, I think that clinicians are measuring their patients’ vitamin D levels more often than is needed. But that is not the focus of this article.)
In the article on this page, let’s look at the results for the vitamin D level that was ordered for one of my patients by their primary care clinician. I’ll ask you how you would interpret these results because I think this will help reinforce some key points in interpreting the results of vitamin D testing.
