Can valproate use by men increase the risk of infertility or neurodevelopmental disorders?

Question from a Member:

Could you comment on counseling men interested in having children about the use of valproate?


This question came up in my own private practice recently. A male patient under my care who is on divalproex recently told me that his wife and he are planning to have a baby. He said that he had read that valproate could affect his fertility and asked whether we needed to be concerned about his medication.
