Sunil Khushalani, MD, DLFAPA, FASAM, is a highly experienced psychiatrist with more than 25 years of clinical, teaching, and leadership experience. He is board-certified in both psychiatry and addiction medicine.
For over 20 years, Dr. Khushalani served as the Medical Director of Adult Services at Sheppard Pratt Health System in Baltimore, and throughout that time, his clinical work was with dually diagnosed (co-occurring disorders) patients. He was one of the co-editors of the Psychiatric Clinics of North America issue of September 2022 titled Addiction Psychiatry: Challenges and Recent Advances.
Since 2022, Dr Khushalani has been working in his other area of interest as the System Medical Director of the Behavioral Health Service line at Atlantic Health System in New Jersey. In this role at Atlantic Health System, Dr. Khushalani leads the behavioral health service line’s clinical quality, performance, growth, and innovation to improve the care, outcomes, and experience for our patients and communities.
Dr. Khushalani has been widely recognized for his passion and commitment to performance improvement in mental health services. He recently co-authored his first book on this topic: Transforming Mental Healthcare: Applying Performance Improvement Methods to Mental Healthcare., which is available on Amazon.com.
Dr. Khushalani also teaches a six-month experiential course on Lean Problem-Solving at Atlantic Health System, where participants learn to apply performance improvement principles to solve real-life challenges encountered in the course of their work.
Dr. Khushalani’s academic position is as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
He is actively involved with national organizations in the field of mental health and is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and a member of the American College of Psychiatry.
