Should we check the PDMP before prescribing a stimulant medication?

In the United States, all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico have PDMPs (source). But, as we noted in our article about Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), including Do’s and Don’ts regarding using the PDMP website, PDMP laws in the United States vary by state. We must become familiar with the PDMP laws in the state(s) where we practice.

Note:

– Not all states make it mandatory to check the PDMP.

– Even when it is mandatory to check the PDMP, the circumstances under which the PDMP must be checked vary from one state to another.
