What diagnoses should we use for patients with Overweight or Obesity?

– Where do Overweight and Obesity fit in the classification used by DSM-5-TR®?

– When should we diagnose Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 Obesity?

– Is “morbid obesity” a diagnosis in ICD-10?

– Did you know that the BMI cut-offs for defining Overweight and Obesity in children and adolescents are different from those used in adults?

There are many reasons why it is important for us to specifically list overweight or obesity among a patient’s diagnoses. Here are only some of the reasons:

1. To keep the problem of overweight or obesity in the focus of our own awareness so that we can continue to evaluate and manage it step by step. If we don’t write it down as a diagnosis, is it possible that we are not taking it seriously?

2. As the starting point of a systematic approach to the evaluation and management of overweight or obesity.

3. As documentation in support of insurance payments for any treatments that may be recommended now or later.
