In another article on this website, we suggested that mental health clinicians should routinely recommend meditation to help their patients/clients, especially those with anxiety symptoms, insomnia, or ADHD.
For most people, rather than attending an in-person or online course, using a meditation app is typically the easiest way to get started. In that article, we recommended just FOUR meditation apps as the best ones to choose from. For more on this, please see the following article on this website:
BEST apps and websites for meditation
The next problem to be solved
But, in my experience, helping the person choose a particular meditation app is not enough. All meditation resources have a ton of meditations; how is one supposed to know where to start? If we don’t provide guidance about how exactly to start meditating with whichever meditation app each person ends up getting, they are likely to feel confused or overwhelmed with the process of starting to use the meditation app. Alternatively, they may start doing more advanced meditations without having learned any of the fundamentals of meditation.
The solution I propose is to provide clear recommendations about which meditations to do in the first few weeks in each of the apps we have recommended.
In this article, I’ll provide recommendations regarding how to guide those new to meditation to get started with mindfulness meditation using the Calm app. On other pages on this website, we’ll do the same for the other meditation apps we have recommended.
