In mental health, oral lavender oil extract has most often been studied for anxiety, varying from mild anxiety symptoms that cannot be diagnosed as a mental disorder to generalized anxiety disorder. On this page, we will look at the efficacy of oral lavender oil extract, patented under the brand name Silexan®, for reducing anxiety. For our other articles about the possible use of oral lavender oil extract in mental health, please see Related Pages below.

Possible mechanisms by which lavender oil extract may reduce anxiety

One factor that makes it harder to study medicinal plants is that they typically contain a large number of chemicals, which have to be identified, isolated, and studied. Lavender is no exception. Two of the chemicals in lavender have been identified as being important for the therapeutic effectsof lavender oil, namely, linalool and linalyl acetate  (Müller et al., 2021; Donelli et al., 2019). Note: We don’t need to remember the names of these chemicals.
