Are bupropion SR and bupropion ER the same thing?

Question from a MemberĀ (emphasis in red added by us): Sometimes, when I prescribe generic bupropion SR, patients are given bupropion ER. Are these basically the same? If there is a difference, what’s the difference? If they’re the same, why can’t the generic say SR, or is that a patented term? The root of the problem…
