Borderline personality disorder: Should we disclose, discuss, and document the diagnosis?

Clinicians often have negative emotional reactions towards patients with borderline personality disorder (Zimmerman et al., 2018). Consistent with this:

– Patients are often not told that the clinician has made the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

– The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder is often not documented in the medical record.

Are there any valid reasons why clinicians should tell patients with borderline personality disorder about the diagnosis, discuss it with them, and document it in the medical record?
