Is your desktop or laptop computer HIPAA-compliant?

One of our Members, in the course of asking a question, commented: “I don’t need an EMR [electronic medical record] because I keep all my records stored and secure on my password-protected computer.”

In this article, we’ll answer the following questions:

– Can clinicians keep medical records containing “protected health information” (PHI) on their desktop or laptop computers as long as access to that computer requires a password?

– What measures do clinicians need to take to make sure that their computers are HIPAA-compliant?
