Yes! Send me advanced, practical tips in psychopharmacology

**If you are ready to join, you can scroll directly to the bottom of this page.**

This website, Simple and Practical Mental Health, provides advanced tips on psychopharmacology to psychiatrists, psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs), and other clinicians who evaluate difficult-to-treat psychiatric disorders and use advanced psychopharmacology skills to manage these challenging problems.

Our Members want and need:

– Practical advice with clear-cut recommendations for using psychiatric medications to help their patients.

– Advanced tips on psychopharmacology, but written in simple language and not in an “academic” style.

– Useful tips that can be read in just a few minutes. Just the bottom line with unnecessary fluff cut out.

Raj Mago, MD, Editor of Simple and Practical Mental Health, says:

I started Simple and Practical Mental Health in 2016 because, after having been in psychiatry as a clinician, researcher, and educator for 25 years, I was frustrated that much of the detailed knowledge and skills that are needed for helping patients were not being taught while a lot of what was being taught was not of practical use in the “real world”!

Many people whom I had helped to train said to me, “Raj, we love your teaching and find it so helpful! It is so practical, and you teach it in a simple way that makes it easy to understand.” That’s why I named the service “Simple and Practical.” 🙂

What is included in the Membership (subscription)?

A Membership (subscription) in Simple and Practical Mental Health includes BOTH of the following:

1. Look up our tips and guidelines when you need them

You will also get immediate access to ALL the articles on our website. We have provided tips on so many topics that about 3000 daily emails have already been derived from these articles, and one more is added every single day. So, you can look up tips about how to deal with difficult psychopharmacology problems as these problems come up in your clinical work.

Importantly, all articles on the website are kept constantly updated based on new research that changes clinical practice, clinical experience, and input from other experts. So, Members don’t need to separately “keep up with the literature”—we do it for them.

By searching our website, our Members (subscribers) can quickly find tips about managing specific clinical problems they are facing.

2. Continuously improve by learning for just 5 minutes a day

We also send these “simple and practical” advanced psychopharmacology tips (extracted from the articles published on our website) to our Members in “Daily Emails.” Every single day, 365 days a year, our Members (subscribers) receive a short email that they can read in 5 minutes or less and gives them specific advice about a challenging clinical issue related to psychiatry and psychopharmacology. This is advice that they can use immediately to help their patients.

Dr. Mago, I am a new provider (pmhnp) and am wondering about lamotrigine and hormonal birth control medication interactions. I was taught that lamotrigine and hormonal birth control each affected each other: that hormonal birth control lowered lamotrigine levels and that lamotrigine lowered the levels of hormonal birth control. I now see (on some websites) that hormonal birth control lowers lamotrigine levels but that lamotrigine does not affect the levels of hormonal birth control. Can you clear this up? Thanks, Matt H

Hi Matt! It is great that you realize the practical importance of having correct and **reliable** answers to these clinically-relevant questions without having to waste a lot of time looking up multiple sources. On simpleandpractical.com, using the “Menus” is the best way to find answers to clinical questions. Your question is about the interaction of lamotrigine and hormonal birth control. You would hover your cursor on “Menus” at the top of any page, then click on either the menu for “Treatments” and go to Mood Stabilizers–Lamotrigine OR the menu for “Drug interactions” and go to the category of “Drug Interactions with Oral Contraceptives and Intrauterine Devices”. Either way, you would find the same articles on our website that answer the two aspects of your question (and other related articles if you want to know about related topics as well). For your convenience, here are direct links to the two articles that answer your specific question:
      1. 5 Action Items about OCs and lamotrigine
      2. Does lamotrigine decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives?
Here’s another article that is related to those ones:
Change lamotrigine dose in transgender women starting hormonal therapy?
