Autism Spectrum Disorders are a group of related conditions. One form is what was previously called Asperger’s Syndrome in which there are problems with nonverbal communication and with empathy, but language and cognitive skills are intact. In my experience, mental health clinicians who work with adults need to learn a lot more about autism spectrum disorders. Certainly I was taught very little about them during my training. We must not miss this diagnosis or wrongly diagnose these patients as having a “personality disorder.”
Here’s a great TEDx talk by a person with “High-functioning autism” or Asperger’s Syndrome. It is very encouraging to see how much a person with high-functioning autism can improve!
Movies related to Autism Spectrum Disorders
Imitation Game. The movie is not about Asperger’s syndrome at all, but Alan Turing clearly had the syndrome. Several characteristics of Asperger’s syndrome are prominently shown in the movie. Leaving aside Asperger’s, the movie is excellent anyway.
